Why Jesus is God in John 17:3

It did not really  matter among people who deny that Jesus is God in John 17:3, to whom the phrase "THE ONLY TRUE GOD" refers to, and what the phrase "AND JESUS CHRIST WHOM YOU SENT" matters to the whole context of the verse. Little they did know that a simple misunderstanding of grammar will lead to soul destruction.

Let us examine.

John 17:3
"....that they may know YOU, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you sent"

It is very clear in this passage that the Father (YOU) and Jesus Christ are to be understood or to be known as the "THE ONLY TRUE GOD". Please note that it wont write "GODS" because the Father and the Son consider their perfect and inseparable union as "ONE" and not TWO or THREE.

John 10:30
"The Father and I are ONE."

Let us proceed.

THE ONLY TRUE GOD = FATHER and JESUS CHRIST

THEY                                                    =   SUBJECT
KNOW                                                  =    PREDICATE/VERB
YOU (FATHER)                                   =   OBJECT OF THE VERB
JESUS CHRIST  WHOM YOU SENT =   OBJECT OF THE VERB
THE ONLY TRUE GOD                      =   COMPLEMENT OF THE VERB
AND                                                      =   CONNECTIVE

The Father and Jesus Christ are both object of the verb and recipient of the VERB. It is to be understood that "YOU AND JESUS CHRIST WHOM YOU SENT are TO BE KNOWN THE ONLY TRUE GOD."


The Greek grammar may have splitted the object of the verb, but most of the times, the English grammar does the opposite. We do not usually split the object of the verb.

Splitting the object of the verb does not harm the context anyway, only some impatient people face the danger of misundestanding and misleading the true context.

Context is as follows;

....that they may know YOU and JESUS CHRIST WHOM YOU SENT, the ONLY TRUE GOD.

YOU and JESUS CHRIST, by virtue of context and not grammar arrangement, SHOULD NOT be separated because they fall on the same boat of speech  (both are OBJECT OF THE VERB)and are CONNECTED by the connective "AND"; YOU AND JESUS CHRIST WHOM YOU SENT.


Otherwise, taking only the FATHER as the ONLY TRUE GOD, the phrase "and Jesus Christ whom you sent" is left hanging on the verse, incomplete and out of sense.

In the light of other examples:

Carol, went to the room and Jenna whom she cared a lot.
Carol, and Jenna whom she cared a lot went to the room.

context: Carol and Jenna went to the room.
